Days 13/14 Mongolia - boring travel days

08 August
Day 13 Mongolia

Mostly a big travel day so I won't be too wordy for a change.

Travelled through a lot of country today.

Big green valleys and landscape that transitioned into rocky mountainous country as we moved north.

Storm in the afternoon while riding on the roof of the truck.  The rain drops were huge.  It was fun to just look up and watch the raindrops coming straight for your face.

Wild camped near a river.  River was brown like Australian rivers ... assumed this was runoff from the storm but it didn't clear at all through the night.  Had a bit of a swim anyway though I'm not sure I was much cleaner than before.

Wild horses were hanging around the area as well.  They ran through the clearing we camped in then crossed the river while dinner was being prepared.  Beautiful.

Lovely full moon tonight.  Sat around the campfire and watched the moon and a storm roll in.

Burnt the used toilet paper on the fire in what is becoming a ritual.

09 August
Day 14 Mongolia

Another big travel day today that started with an overnight storm.

Lots of rain overnight which made for a soggy start to the morning. The herd of horses came back during the night and walked / grazed through the camp.  A few tents were hit as they walked through.  One of the guys got up for a pee at some point and got a bit of a shock being surrounded by horses.

As a lovely gift they left a bunch of horse shit everywhere to make up for all the dung that was cleared out by us the previous afternoon.

Putting away the wet tents ran as smoothly as a military operation.  Tents were done 1 by 1.  We first go out bags out, then unpegged the tent.  A couple of people would pick up the tent and carry it over to the awning up next to the truck so it could be packed up out of the rain.  A couple of people would quickly pack up the tent then the next one would be brought over.

Meanwhile the breakfast crew was in the truck making hot drinks for the workers outside.

Really efficient process that comes from years of practice by the crew.

Breakfast was snacks while we drove in the rain to the town of Moron.  Sadly I didn't see any Moron souvenirs but we're going back through in a couple of days so I'll see if I can pick something up.

Shopping and brunch in Moron then several more hours drive to Khuvsgul Lake in the north of the country.

Miserable weather all day but thankfully we got off the truck and walked into a nice ger camp again.  Staying here for 2 nights then off to another camping spot somewhere around the lake.

Over dinner we dodged up a deck for a game of Cards Against Humanity.   First time for a few people.  Started in the restaurant after dinner then moved to one of the gers.  It was great fun but fizzled out after a while because we had a lack of cards.  Started to get too many repeats.

We found out today that there is a local Nadaam festival on here the day we leave!  This is awesome.  It's basically their local sporting festival where they do horse racing and other horse things, archery and wrestling.  This festival happens nearer the capital in early July so I thought we were going to miss it.  Hopefully it'll be good!
