Day 1 Odense - sightseeing Odense and Copenhagen

07 November
Day 1 Odense / Day 1 Copenhagen

Whirlwind visit to Odense.  This town is mostly famous for being the place where Hans Christian Anderson grew up.

We have a half day here today and the boys and I basically do a bit of a walk around town for a couple of hours before jumping on a train to Copenhagen.

What to say about Odense?  It's a nice small city that's marred right now by a big construction project to put a metro / subway into the city.  We did sit and watch the construction site for a few minutes.  There were a pair of guys using heavy machinery to pull pipes out of the ground.  One would use a machine (via remote control) to grab the pipe and pull it out while the other would use the claw of his digger to unscrew the pipe segment then stick it in a big cutlery holder.  Fascinating process and those guys were really skilled with the machinery.

Like all the other cities I've been to in Denmark it's got a lot of beautiful old buildings and a lovely old town with lots of sculptures, churches and old buildings everywhere.  We ran across a couple from the 1600s.

The big cathedral in town was beautiful.  They had a beautiful gold altarpiece and a fantastic pipe organ.  Was interesting watching the guys snap away.  Last time they had been in this church they had been students with cameras that used film.  Since film was costly to process they were sparing with the number of photos they took.  Happily snapping away now with their phones.

But ultimately Odense was just another nice town that we didn't have time to really dig our teeth into.

It soon became time to go check out of the hotel and grab a train back to Copenhagen.  It's been about a week since I was here and I was looking forward to getting back to it.  I enjoyed the day and a half I had spent here the first time.

It was a couple of hours before I could check into my hostel (different one from last time) so I dumped my bag in Julian's hotel room and then we went and met up with a couple of rotary exchange students.  Anna (Swedish) and Signe (Danish).  Anna lived with John for a few months and John knew Signe through one of the other exchange students he had.  Both really nice chicks and both very attractive!  They were both coming in to see John and hang out with us for the night.

We basically just did a bit of sightseeing around Copenhagen.  Went to the area with all the colourful buildings and ships and we drank some mulled wine and ate Danish scones I guess you'd call them.  Went and saw the little mermaid.  Climbed a tower to go to a lookout.  Watched the changing of the guard outside the royal palace. Some of it was treading the same ground I'd done the first day but it was fun.

The little mermaid's older sister was definitely the pick of the two.

After that we went for dinner at a nice restaurant serving traditional Danish food where another one of John's exchange students joined us (Mikkel I think) then out for a couple of drinks.

It was a fun day and nice to spend it with people I knew.

I finally checked into my new hostel just before midnight and it was a much better hostel than the other one.   More expensive but it's new, has great facilities and wasn't too busy.
